¶ … Large System: Managing Strategic and Large Scale Systems Change
The objective of this study is to describe Patagonia's organization design or the Star Model and specifically the Galbraith Star Model. This study will assess the alignments among the elements of the design and explain how Patagonia integrates sustainability into its design.
Description of Patagonia's Organizational Design
Patagonia's organizational design is based on Jay Galbraith's 'Star Model', which is characterized by five categories including those of: (1) structure; (2) people; (3) strategy; (4) rewards; and (5) process. (Reinhardt, Casadesus-Masanell, and Freier, 2003, paraphrased) Patagonia is a privately owned company, which provides the leadership with a great deal of freedom since it does not have to answer to a public array of shareholders and investors. Two strategic decisions that were closely linked were addressed by Patagonia executives in 2003. Patagonia designs, markets and distributes high-performance wear for the outdoors. The first decision was centered on whether Patagonia should expand their product base, which included mountain and rock climbing clothing as well as clothing suitable for snow and ice activities including snowboarding, fishing, and other outdoor sporting activities. The question was how much expansion could be undertaken without sacrificing quality and reputation. As well, Patagonia's designs were very innovative enabling the company to charge 20%...
More importantly, because the system needs to be perceived as fair, employee's opinions must be taken into account. We are not putting this system into place to be punitive, but rather to protect the interests of all of the employees. It is believed that the system of inquiry will have a strongly positive effect on the organization. Verizon has long had some form of ethical code, but with the new
System Design: Oahu Base Area Network The aim of this paper is to examine and discuss the Navy's decision to build the largest local area network (LAN) connecting the U.S. Pacific Fleet using information-gathering techniques and design methods. The system has the capacity to connect sailors and marines within the 102-million square miles of the Pacific Fleet's command coverage. Moreover it will provide the indispensable access for supplying and training the
Clay and materials similar are more readily subject to the environmental and atmospheric meteorological conditions that can impact the sustainability of a clay-based foundation. Another problem that can cause problems for a foundation subject to weak soil characteristics is "subsidence" (Shabha, Kuhwald, 1995). According to Shabha & Kuhwald (1995), "Subsidence can be defined as a downward movement or a soil on which buildings stand from causes unconnected with loading from
Foundation Comparison: Burj Khalifa vs. Taipei 101 This report aims at assessing the foundation of the world's tallest and second tallest skyscrapers; the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai and Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan. Currently, Burj Khalifa is the world's tallest building taking over the title from Taipei 101 topping out at a height of 828 metres. Khalifa is built on silty sand and sandstones while Taipei 101, with a
Peace Freedom is the Foundation of Peace. Without freedom, there is no peace. America, by nature, stands for freedom, and we must always remember, we benefit when it expands. So we must stand by those nations moving toward freedom. We must stand up to those nations who deny freedom and threaten our neighbors or our vital interests. We must assert emphatically that the future will belong to the free. Today's
The materials that are collected in them are solids from the various gases (which cooled inside these clouds). The gravity from the sun pulled them closer towards each other. This contributed to the formation of the planets and asteroids. ("Summary," 2007) (Williams, 2010) Once a star is finished developing, is when solar winds will blow rock and debris away from the sun. This forms the Kuiper Belt and Oort Clouds,
